A native of Easton, Dr. Burke received an Associate degree in Life Science from Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA, a Batchelors degree in Animal Science from Cornell University, and her DVM from Cornell University. She worked for five years as both a lab technician and a pharmaceutical sales representative for Pfizer Health prior to Veterinary School. Dr. Burke completed her internship in small animal medicine and surgery at The Animal Medical Center in New York, NY. She was employed as a staff veterinarian at North Shore Animal League, Port Washington, NY for two years.
THOREAU VETERINARY HOSPITAL, INC. was founded by Dr. Burke in December, 1988. AAHA certification was awarded in 1993. After practicing in the city of Easton for thirteen years, the hospital was relocated to its present location in 2001. Dr. Burke is married and has two feline companions.

Dr. Messina graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, and completed her clinical program at the University of Pennsylvania in January 2009. She obtained a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Rutgers University in 2005.
Dr. Messina has a special interest in surgery, geriatrics, and feline medicine. Before joining Thoreau Veterinary Hospital, she worked as a veterinarian at a feline hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Messina has also devoted her time to performing spays and neuters in multiple shelters, and in 2008 she completed an externship at the ASPCA in New York City.
In her free time, Dr. Messina enjoys painting, running, hiking with her dog Molly, and relaxing at home with her cat Elliot.

Stacie is a certified veterinary technician. She graduated from Northampton Community College in 1999 with an associate’s degree in General Studies and Veterinary Technology. She is a member of NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America), LVVMA (Lehigh Valley Veterinary Medical Association), and AVDS (American Veterinary Dental Society). She is currently pursuing certification as a veterinary dental technician. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, son and two cats.

Laura is one of our Certified Veterinary Technicians. She is also our Staff Educator in charge of training. Laura’s interests include emergency medicine and anesthesia. She loves spending time with her fiancé Jason and her two adorable pitbulls “Lala” and “Neo”. Laura is fluent in Spanish and enjoys aiding in bilingual client communication.

Beckie is a Veterinary Assistant who is currently pursuing certification in the Veterinary Technician program at Northampton Community College. Before moving to Bethlehem, she was an art teacher and a coach for a nationally competitive cheerleading squad. Beckie lives with her husband John who works as a Manager of Systems Engineering at FLSmidth.
Their "Kids" (All pictured to the left) are "Roxie" - a black lab that Beckie got as a puppy from a rescue in Alabama; "Cutter" - a pomeranian mix; and Amber - another rescue dog with an unknown past. At her parents' home in New Jersey, she also has "Bo" - a Chow / Golden Retriever mix who was a rescue from West Virginia and "Buddie" - an energetic Golden Retriever. When Beckie is not working or studying, she enjoys spending time with her husband and friends. Beckie's favorite season is summer because she loves to swim and dive. She was also the captain of her college's diving team. Beckie's dream is to live somewhere warm and tropical where she can work with animals.

Jessica is one of our receptionists. In May 2010, she completed her bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature with a minor in Women's Studies. She is the owner of a Yorkie named Finnegan. When she is not at work, Jessica enjoys reading, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends.

Haley is origanally from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Northern High School in Northern York County in 2010. Haley has been volunteer at the Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. since 2007. She is currently in the Veterinary Technician program at Northampton Community College. She has five cats at home that were all strays she had taken in and a beta fish named Clouse. After graduating she plans on getting involved with wildlife rehabilitation along with working in a small animal hospital. In her spare time she enjoys reading, watching Anime, listening to music, and spending time with friends and her cats. |

Larry has been a
Certified Veterinary Technician since 2007 and he has been with Thoreau
Veterinary Hospital since 2010. He also practices as an herbalist for
Dr. Burke and her clients, drawing from his training at the Center for
Herbal Studies in the use of Ayurvedic, Chinese, Native American,
European, and Middle Eastern plant-based medicines.

Jennah recently became a Certified Veterinary
Technician and obtained her associates degree in Veterinary Technology
from Northampton Community College. Jennah completed her externship at
both Thoreau and the Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville, PA. She is
currently pursuing a second degree in Biological Science from NCC with
the intention of either becoming a veterinarian or earning a doctorate
degree in Biology specializing in feline studies. She is a member of Phi
Theta Kappa National Honors Society. When not work or going to class,
Jennah enjoys spending time with her two cats, Butters and Mittens.
Jennah loves all animals and hopes that one day she can work with bigger
cats.
